Our Story
Vital Signals was founded by a team with more than 140 combined patents, 60+ scientific publications, and experience developing dozens of medical technologies at organizations including Masimo, Google, MIT and the University of Michigan.
Vital Signals is on a mission to help people materially improve their healthspan by building highly accurate devices that give users a better understanding of their cardiovascular health.
Our relentless focus on accuracy comes directly from our founders. Several years ago our co-founder and CEO, Tom Moss, suffered a nearly fatal hypertensive crisis while on vacation with his family. He learned that he had severe undiagnosed hypertension and coronary artery disease. He wanted to understand how different lifestyle choices affected his blood pressure and arterial health but quickly realized there was no product available that could help. Not wanting to give up, Tom sought out experts who could explain to him why no good products existed in the market and what could be done about it.
A mutual friend introduced Tom to Dr. Muhammad Usman, our Chief Science Officer, and Dr. Faisal Kashif, our Chief Technology officer. Usman and Faisal first worked together 26 years ago, though they lost touch temporarily when Faisal went to MIT to earn his Ph.D. The two reconnected when Usman recruited Faisal away from Google in 2016 to join him at Masimo, the medical devices company which pioneered SpO2 measurement. The pair worked together on numerous projects including brain monitoring (EEG), ECG, daily activity detection, several PPG-based parameters, and more. When they met Tom, they got excited about the possibility of bringing their combined expertise together to start a company that could finally solve the problems holding the industry back. Critically, Vital Signals is not stopping at blood pressure, the company is also working on expanding the capabilities of its technology for the early detection of coronary artery disease, arterial plaque, and arterial stiffness.
Everyone at the company shares a unified purpose. We all know someone who has died of heart attacks, stroke, congestive heart failure or a similar cardiovascular issue. These diseases progress for years before they are detected by a clinician due to lack of proper instrumentation and tests. We intend to use our knowledge and experience to make a difference not only by saving lives but by ensuring better quality of life for everyone.
Our Founders
Tom Moss, CEO
Throughout his career, Tom has had a consistent instinct for identifying inflection points when technology, consumer behavior, and market readiness align to make a new category possible. Tom’s personal experience shapes how he approaches blood pressure management through product design and development.
Most recently, Tom served as COO at Skydio and later as its CEO of APAC, scaling it into the largest drone manufacturer in the United States and spearheading the company’s expansion into Defense, Law Enforcement, and Commercial/Enterprise markets.
He began his career leading business development for Android at Google, helping scale the platform from zero to billions of devices. He went on to found and exit several companies, including 3LM (acquired by Motorola/Google) and Nextbit, makers of Robin, the first cloud-first smartphone (acquired by Razer).
Tom is named as a co-inventor on more than 20 patents throughout his career.
Mohammad Usman, Chief Science Officer
Mohammad “Usman” is a pioneer in physiological sensing, signal processing, and medical device innovation. He has spent his career translating cutting-edge research into products that help people better understand and manage their health. His deep expertise in physiological sensing and system architecture helps drive Signal Ring's mission to make blood pressure more accessible, understandable, and actionable for millions of people.
Prior to joining Signal Ring, Usman served as Executive VP of Research & Development at Masimo, a global leader in noninvasive patient monitoring technologies. He has contributed to the development of more than 20 medical devices, including EEG, EKG, hemoglobin, carbon monoxide, and respiration monitoring systems.
Before joining Masimo, Usman founded the companies Quartics and Razzor Technologies. His work in signal processing has also powered video and imaging technologies used by leading semiconductor and technology companies.
Usman holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan. He is recipient of the IEEE Best Paper of the Year Award in Signal Processing. He has authored more than 30 publications and holds over 80 patents.
Faisal M. Kashif, Chief Technology Officer
Faisal M. Kashif is an expert in computational physiology and biomedical engineering. He brings deep expertise in wearable sensing, physiological modeling and machine intelligence to help advance a new generation of health monitoring technologies at Signal Ring.
His work focuses on combining advances in physiology, artificial intelligence and wearable sensing to help people better understand their health in everyday life. He has helped develop more than a dozen medical technologies spanning brain monitoring, cardiovascular monitoring, AI-driven disease tracking, wearable vital-sign sensing and hemodynamic analysis.
Prior to joining Signal Ring, Faisal held leadership roles at both Masimo and Google, where he worked on translating complex physiological data into actionable health insights. His multidisciplinary background combines expertise in electrical engineering, physiology, signal processing, systems modeling and neuro-monitoring.
Faisal earned both his master's degree and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from MIT. His doctoral research in noninvasive brain monitoring earned MIT's Helen Carr Peake Award for Outstanding Thesis, and his work has been recognized through a CIMIT/MIT Fellowship. An inventor and researcher, Faisal has authored more than 30 publications and holds over 40 patents.
