About Signal Ring and how it works
What is Signal Ring?
Signal Ring is a cuffless blood pressure device you wear like an everyday ring. It tracks your blood pressure from your finger with no cuff and no calibration, and it pairs every reading with context so you can see how your numbers move over time instead of reacting to one in isolation.
Can a ring really measure blood pressure without a cuff?
Yes. Instead of squeezing your arm to measure pressure directly, Signal Ring reads the pulse wave your heartbeat creates and translates it into a blood pressure number. Nothing inflates and nothing squeezes, which is also why it can take readings throughout the day rather than capturing a single moment.
How does Signal Ring measure blood pressure?
Signal Ring uses a high-speed optical sensor that reads blood flow at much higher resolution than earlier cuffless devices. That extra detail lets its physiological model separate the signal of your blood pressure from the constant movement of your arteries, so every reading is built from scratch and unique to you.
What are background readings?
Background readings are blood pressure measurements Signal Ring takes quietly through the day without any input from you. Because there is nothing to inflate, tracking can happen in the background, building into a mean arterial pressure (MAP) graph that shows your blood pressure across a whole day in a way a single cuff reading never could.
What is a MAP graph?
A MAP (mean arterial pressure) graph is a view of your blood pressure across the full day, built from Signal Ring's background readings. It shows how your numbers rise and fall in response to everything you do, and it compares today against your normal range so patterns surface early.
Is Signal Ring a medical or diagnostic device?
Signal Ring is a wellness device to be used for maintaining or encouraging a healthy lifestyle. Its job is to promote, track, and encourage choices to give you a fuller, more honest picture of your blood pressure between visits, not to diagnose a condition or make the call a clinician makes.
Accuracy and calibration
Does Signal Ring need calibration?
No. Signal Ring never needs a cuff, including to calibrate, and it never will. It builds each reading from scratch using your own physiology, so there is no baseline to set and nothing to keep up to date.
Why do other cuffless monitors need calibration when Signal Ring does not?
Most cuffless monitors calibrate against a traditional cuff, then estimate your blood pressure by comparing each later reading against that baseline. The trouble is that your arteries keep changing on their own, so the baseline goes stale within hours and the readings drift, which is why those devices ask you to recalibrate so often. Signal Ring reads your arterial environment directly, so it never needs a baseline in the first place.
Isn't a cuff perfectly accurate? Why does any blood pressure reading vary?
No measurement captures blood pressure perfectly, because blood pressure itself is always moving. Even a traditional cuff, the clinical standard, has an accepted margin of error and only describes the one moment you took it. Your pressure changes minute to minute with stress, posture, caffeine, temperature, and activity, so two correct readings taken at different times will naturally differ. This is why a single number, from any device, rarely tells the whole story. The clearest picture comes from seeing your blood pressure across the day and watching the patterns, rather than treating any one reading as the final word.
Why does Signal Ring sometimes say something different than my cuff?
Because blood pressure is constantly moving, and the two devices are almost never reading the exact same moment. Your blood pressure rises and falls all day in response to stress, posture, caffeine, activity, even a full bladder or talking while you measure. A cuff and a ring taken minutes apart, or in different conditions, can both be correct and still show different numbers. The point of seeing your blood pressure across the day is that patterns over time tell you far more than any single reading from any single device.
Using Signal Ring day to day
How do I take a reading?
Signal Ring guides you through each on-demand reading step by step. It reminds you of your posture, coaches you through slow deep breaths, and uses calming music and gentle animations in place of the squeeze and noise of a cuff, so when the reading is complete you can trust the result.
Do I have to do anything for background readings?
No. Background readings happen automatically through the day without any action from you. You take a guided reading when you want a precise one on demand, and Signal Ring handles the rest in the background.
Does Signal Ring need my phone nearby?
Yes. Signal Ring connects to your phone over Bluetooth LE. Due to the complexities of estimating blood pressure you will want to ensure your phone is within range for readings to sync. The Signal Ring app is where your readings, context, and MAP graph live.
Which finger do I wear it on?
Signal Ring is usually worn on your index finger. It comes in sizes 5 to 13 and a free sizing kit so you can find your fit before your ring is shipped.
What does each reading tell me?
Every reading comes with context. Signal Ring notes the recent activities that may have affected your result, so you know what your numbers mean. A reading of 125/78 at rest and 125/78 right after a workout are not the same thing, and Signal Ring is built to show you that difference.
